The total time required depends on the state of your manuscript (MS). If this is your first book, the edit will likely take longer than the averages given below. Here’s a general idea of what to expect for an 80,000-word manuscript that has already gone through several thorough rounds of self-editing and beta reader or writer critique circle feedback:
- Proofreading: ~20-25 hours (for a clean, pre-edited MS)
- Copy Editing Only: ~25-30 hours
- Content Editing Only: ~35-40 hours
- Combined Copy + Content Edit: ~35–45 hours (most cost-efficient and popular option)
- Developmental Editing: Highly variable, ~40–100+ hours depending on the stage and complexity of the project
Developmental editing is often the most time-consuming, while proofreading is generally the fastest. The cleaner your MS, the more efficient (and cost-effective) the edit will be. If your manuscript has significant tense, POV, or structural issues, you may need to spend some time yourself revising it before you are ready to be professionally edited, as otherwise the hours involved in fixing this issue could be prohibitive.
Please reach out for a sample edit in order to get a quote on hours and see where your MS is at and what level of editing would best serve you and your story.
Coaching sessions (for writers or editors) are fully customizable and typically run about 2 hours.

Technical Details
For manuscripts over 5,000 words, I require a free sample edit of up to 1,000 words before providing a quote. This helps determine whether we’re a good fit and allows me to assess the level of editing required.
Note: Short stories are not eligible for a free sample edit, but I’m happy to offer editing for short fiction or anthologies as a paid service.
When reaching out, please include the following:
- Word count of your completed manuscript
- Contact details
- Genre and a brief plot summary
- Your publishing goals (indie, hybrid, traditional)
- Any deadlines or scheduling needs
- What you’re looking for in an editor
All genres and manuscript lengths are welcome.
Submission Format & Software
Manuscripts (including samples) must be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format. Edits will be made using Track Changes, with comments provided throughout to explain more complex suggestions. While basic fixes (e.g., grammar, typos) may appear without comment, all larger edits will include clear rationale. Authors should be comfortable using MS Word and the Track Changes feature to ensure a smooth, productive editing experience.
Timeline & Availability
Turnaround time varies by project length and current workload. On average, manuscripts are returned within two months. I encourage booking well in advance to secure your spot. A firm deadline will be provided before any project is accepted. If faster service is needed, rush options may be available at an adjusted hourly rate.
Style Guides & Focus Areas
If your manuscript must follow a specific style guide (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style), please specify the edition or provide a copy if needed. When submitting your manuscript, feel free to highlight any areas of concern or sections where you’d like me to pay extra attention.
Payment
All payments must be made via e-transfer unless otherwise arranged.
- 50% deposit is due before editing begins
- Remaining balance is due after the edited manuscript is returned
- The first invoice reflects the project estimate; the final invoice reflects actual time worked
(You’ll be consulted in advance if edits are expected to exceed the estimate)
PayPal is available for an additional processing fee. Cheques may be accepted upon request. Invoices will be issued via email.
Editing Process & Expectations
Substantive editing is a highly collaborative and often energizing stage in a writer’s journey. You’ll receive detailed, personalized feedback that may highlight story elements requiring further revision—such as character development or unresolved plot threads. While I’ll guide you through those insights, some additional work may be required on your end post-edit.
If you make substantial changes after editing, this can unintentionally introduce new errors. While I return all manuscripts fully edited, I recommend hiring a proofreader if further revisions are made post-edit.
Proofreading is a distinct stage and ideally completed by someone who hasn’t worked on the manuscript previously, to ensure clear, objective eyes. While not always necessary, a final proofread before publication is strongly encouraged if you revise after our edit.
